8th Battalion / Depot Battalion, Cheshire Regiment
(South Lancashire Regiment)

Discharged wounded 26th January 1916

Harry Griffiths heeded the call up in early 1916 and joined the South Lancashire Regiment. After intensive training he was despatched to the Western Front in France just in time for the Battle of the Somme. He was involved in the action throughout the summer and into the autumn, before he lost his life at Ancre as the battle was drawing to a close.

His brother Emanuel had volunteered for active service on 24 August 1914, in Chester and was part of the forces opening up the new front at Gallipoli. He was wounded, shipped back to the UK, returned to his home-based unit, but eventually discharged unfit due to his injuries in January 1916.
