Soldiers of the Farndon War Memorial

Private John Gauterin

31518 2nd Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment
Died 21 Oct 1916 Aged 23

John Gauterin was the son of Charles and Jane Gauterin, of The Lodge, Farndon, Chester

(Peter Gauterin, Farndon resident and great nephew of John is currently compiling a biography of his ancestor. Hopefully it will appear here in the near future. Research continues into his life in Farndon and his war record. John originally joined the Cheshire Yeomanry with Charlie Williamson (also recorded on the Farndon memorial). Both were transferred to the South Lancs and were killed in action on the Somme. Another Farndon man Bob Tilston, who survived the war and lived into his nineties, was with the men when they died. Peter Gauterin has spoken to Bob about his experiences and it is hoped that this will be included in his work.

The body of John Gauterin was never found and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme, France (panel 7A).

The Panel below bearing his name was photographed by myself on a visit during August 2007.
