Signalman David Pickavance (1893-1918)

David Pickavance was born in 1893, the son of William and Agnes Pickavance of Ashton Hey. He joined up with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and was posted to H.M.S. Vivid to train as a Signalman. It has been recorded elsewhere that he was killed in action - this was not the case, although his death on 29 Sep 1918 at the age of only 18, was as a result of the war and accordingly he is recored on the database for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

David was the twentieth death caused by the war in the parish. His body was returned home and now lies in the churchyard.
